Lessons learnt in home designing!

I learned a lot in home designing when we recently bought our first house.

Lessons learned -
  1. The colors in your house decide how the environment would be. Lighter colors tend to excite/energize people and soothes their eyes. Darker colors tend to create a cozy environment. This is true for furniture, flooring, colors of plants in landscape and so on.
  2. Vertical grains on the floor make the room appear longer while horizontal grains make it wider.
  3. You can be all creative about how you select colors on flooring and furniture, while only few combinations go together. To make your choices easier, always select floor color first and then everything else falls in place. Builders tell you to do other way round for their own convenience. They do it because woodwork is done on house before flooring.
  4. Even if you do mistakes while picking colors, it's not all lost. You can always change the look and feel by just adding a carpet/rug.
  5. Easy to clean, not-too-cold to walk on in winter should be primary considerations when selecting flooring.
  6. Above all, dont spend too much money on improvements! They are hard to sell. Buyers always compare prices of houses in the neighborhood and most of them dont care too much about improvements!
